“I have got you covered.” These are Annette’s famed words. When I was in need of a lovely home meal, a break from school, words of encouragement, a hug, a place to stay, lots of snickers and ice-cream, Annette got me covered. I have been at The House for a break from studies, games, meals, and a healthy dose of laughter.  I have been at The House for weeks for all things that make a home, home.

The Franklins have been so welcoming, kind, and supportive. Navigating studies in a foreign country was challenging and at first lonely for me. When my first semester at college was nearly ending, I was stressed and worried about where I would stay for winter break, whilst my classmates traveled home for Christmas. This was my first winter experience. I did not want to remain on campus because it becomes quite depressing. I stayed with the Franklins. I enjoyed my first white Christmas – it was filled with laughter from games, family meals, and warmth – but most importantly I felt at home. I got a new perspective of winter; unlike the sad, gloomy and lonely feeling that comes with the cold season, winter at the Franklins was beautiful and warm.

It would have been difficult to be in the US after my graduation; let alone being in the US during this COVID situation, uncertain of what’s next and far away from my family. However, I have been at The House for months and I am still covered. I found a home away from home. What I love about this home is the people who make it home.
